D.C.'s Secret Study Spots

Finding the ideal study spot and location can be hard, even harder when you’ve just moved to a new place! Staying within the walls of the university library can be tempting but at the same time they can be overcrowded and overwhelming. A change of scenery may keep you motivated to meet your deadlines, all while allowing you to explore your new prestigious home.

Washington D.C. Secret Study Spots

Studying in one of the most important and historic cities in the US could never be boring, nor should it! While the libraries are filled with incredible architecture and artwork, what you really need is a little fresh air to calm the mind! As a student, it is important to find a comfortable study spot to help better your learning experience.

While in DC, you may be drawn to historic libraries or university areas, but how about stepping beyond that? Here are some of our favorite unique outdoor study locations in Washington DC!

Meridian Hill Park

Meridian Hill Park is a beautiful hidden gem situated in the neighborhood of Columbia Heights. A part of Rock Creek Park, this area is filled with breathtaking gardens, marble statues, cascading waterfalls, and holds major history of the city. It is the ideal location when you’re tired of staying indoors staring at an empty wall. The park is open to the public until 9pm during the winter and until midnight through the summer!

While the park includes a variety of study spaces to keep you on task; the historic attractions are just a few steps away when you need a break. Stroll down the blooming gardens and learn about the history of DC. Or check out the Joan of Arc statue on your study break, the possibilities are endless! There are a variety of seating perfect for an outside study session and when you need a break, wander around the park and take in the scenery.

Outbox

Is there anything better than a study space designed by students for students?

Outbox is a public indoor/outdoor office space located in Silver Springs. The project was created as a collaboration between Architectural Technology students and OEC engineering. Its glass design creates the feeling of being outdoors while remaining in close proximity to everything a student needs, including power outlets and wifi!

The best part? The cubes can be shifted to different areas so you’ll never find yourself in an overcrowded area.

We don’t mind lining up to get a spot each morning as Outbox is truly a unique study location. It is nothing like you've ever seen or experienced before. The design will have you feeling like you're taking in the sunshine and enjoying the outdoors while still protecting you from the unpredictable weather. Its only downfall is the limited seating capacity (20) but it is definitely worth checking out.

Georgetown Waterfront Park

How about a national park situated along the river for a change of scenery as your next study spot?

Georgetown Waterfront Park is exactly that and so much more! This park is the locals and visitors' favorite spot, offering a quiet space for a brainstorming session while exploring the beauty of DC. Nothing better than being surrounded by nature and discovering a hidden gem!

The spacious outdoor park will give you peace when you need it the most. There are a number of seating choices to pick from, you can even just sit by the river and catch up on your reading. When you need a break, the park is filled with activities to get you moving! Get lost in nature by exploring labyrinths, fountains and the numerous gardens the park has to offer. You can even rent a kayak and row along the Potomac river.

Bartholdi Park

A park named after the architect of the Statue of Liberty will not disappoint you!

Bartholdi Park includes benches and a cafe secluded from the busy city, ideal for a student study spot. The outdoor cafe may not seem so unique, but you’re surrounded by plants of the future! The sustainable initiative of the park consists of plants which are not bound to perfect soil, geography or weather conditions. Therefore, the park will always be colorful, lively and full of exotic flora that you probably haven't even heard of!

In 2016, the park was redesigned as a Sustainable Initiative Site with a focus on garden styles and diverse plant life. When you’re in need of a study break, explore the numerous botanic gardens and admire some plants that you couldn’t have even possibly thought of! It’s no wonder why locals keep this hidden gem a secret!
